The Pointer School Way (PSW) is our way of life at The Pointer School. It forms our core ethos for pupils (and staff!), and is also the foundation of our Pastoral Curriculum. The Pointer School Way is based on the motto "Love God, Love People, Because God Loves Us" and is taught explicitly throughout the week to pupils as follows:
Pupils are taught how to 'Love God' through learning about Him, prayer, and circle times. Circle times explore themes in the Bible as well as how to take care of God's creation, our world.
Pupils are taught how to 'Love People' through our Relationships and Health curriculum. This curriculum focuses on learning about different types of people and the importance of treating everyone with respect, as well as finding out about Britain and democracy. The same themes are followed throughout the school. A follow-up extension lesson, chosen by each year group, also relates to this aspect of the PSW. Teachers may choose to explore debating, philosophy, or a relevant social movement such as Black Lives Matter. Please note that Relationships and Health Education is a compulsory aspect of the British National Curriculum. You can read more about this in the latest Government Guidance for parents.
In weekly reflection times, pupils are taught to take care of themselves, mentally, physically, and spiritually - 'Because God Loves Us'. The weekly reflection lessons allow children the chance to think about the positives of their week as well as prepare for the future. This is an important practice of resilience and goal setting. A follow-up extension lesson, chosen by each year group, also relates to this aspect of PSW. Teachers may focus on a skill such as growth mindset or emotional health.
Each class teacher creates their own class rules, based in some way on the PSW. PSW posters are on display throughout the school and in each classroom.
Every Friday, teachers award a PSW sticker to the child in their class who has set the best example of conduct in the Pointer School Way. Weekly certificates are also awarded for outstanding academic or pastoral achievement.
At the end of each term, we award medals in our Medals Assembly to reflect different tenets of PSW. Staff may nominate any pupil in the school for a PSW medal, and winners are selected by the Head.
